 29th November 2024

For Linthwaite FC, this month marks a year of delivering pan disability football for the community in Colne Valley & the surrounding area.

The club host playing opportunities for people with additional needs at their home at Colne Valley High School; an FA Comets session for 5-11 year olds and an FA Just Play centre for adults aged 16+.

“Our main focus for both these sessions is fun, enjoyment & creating a safe environment where they can express themselves.” Says club Secretary, James Carter.

“Since taking on the role of Club Secretary in 2021, my main focus was to bring Linthwaite Football Club back to Linthwaite. A lot of work has gone on behind the scenes since then, however, at the beginning of last season I could see the light at the end of a tunnel with a Planning Application that I had been helping with for over 18 months. Thankfully, the application was granted. This was huge for the club as it meant, we could start to set solid foundations to fully ensure football is available to everyone in the community. One of our current pan-disability players & helper, would regularly be up at these facilities every night. I would speak with him almost every day, he informed me that he used to play, however, there are currently no teams in the local area offering pan-disability sessions. This is where our story began & I have a lot to thank Paul for.”

The club have built a core group of over 30 players regularly attending the Comets and Just Play sessions, which take place on a Friday evening at the school. The sessions have been made possible through the hard work and dedication of the volunteers at the club, in addition to accessing funding to support new disability provision through The FA and Sport England. The school have been a great support in making the sessions successful ensuring players always feel safe and welcome, due in part to their fantastic staff.

Success stories include junior players joining mainstream teams, ensuring that players with additional needs have a choice of playing opportunities at the club either within the disability pathway or mainstream pathway. The Adult sessions have also provided opportunities for participants to support in coaching roles, shadowing other coaches and leading sessions with their peers.

“The opportunities that this has opened up for our young players is life changing.” Said James Carter, Club Secretary. “The feeling you walk away with each week, after the sessions is like no other. All the coaches get together at the end of the sessions & the smiles on our faces & positivity is absolutely priceless.”

The transformation in the participants is absolutely incredible, players who were anxious to even enter the field in their first week, have gone on to make new friends and have developed a confidence in interacting with team mates. The impact isn’t just limited to the players, the sessions also provide the opportunity for families to socialise with other parents of children with additional needs. Allowing them to take a step back and see their children laughing and smiling and through football. Parents are also encouraged to get involved and support the sessions too, if they’re feeling a bit more hands on, with a number of parents donning their boots to support the sessions.

Future plans for the club’s disability pathway, include entering teams into the West Riding Ability Counts League and even looking into impairment specific provision. This will be underpinned by recruiting additional volunteers to join the existing workforce who are making a real difference in the Colne Valley area.

Football Development Officer, Tom Dent said: “The pan disability sessions at Linthwaite have gone from strength to strength in the year that they’ve been up and running and it’s absolutely fantastic to see! This is testament to the hard work and dedication that James and the team of volunteers have put into set up and run both, the Comets and Just Play programmes. The way the team of volunteers engage both parents and players throughout is heart-warming and really contributes to the success of the sessions. The players all have smiles on their faces, the parents are sharing positive comments from the sidelines. It’s brilliant!”

If you want to get involved at Linthwaite, you can visit their website here https://shorturl.at/TNF28 , complete their contact sign up form here https://shorturl.at/6qPbU or contact James on secretary@linthwaitefootballclub.co.uk.

Comets is a recreational, pan-disability football programme for disabled boys and girls aged between 5 and 11. Pan-disability is the largest format of disability football, which sees players with a broad range of impairments and health conditions play together.

Comets offers a new, flexible and inclusive way of playing, one that’s all about playfulness, friendships and having fun. More than anything, Comets is football that breaks the old rules and replaces them with a brand new one: JUST BE YOU.

Sessions are being held at GT Sports on Wednesdays. Book now, drop them a DM or email info@gtsports.co.uk

We have now had a response from the Football Association in relation to boys being able to play in girls leagues. The FA had stated when we refused to allow a boy to sign for a WRGFL girls team that all Youth Leagues in England were mixed Leagues and we could not refuse the registration. As all Club Members know we did refuse that registration and were therefore deemed to be in breach of FA rules.

The WRGFL wanted to celebrate the signing of its 6000th player to the league and as that player played for Woodlanders FC, a club local to Huddersfield Town, we asked the Championship Club if they would help us make the occasion special.

Our 6000th player Lola Davenport who is a Huddersfield Town FC season ticket holder was presented with a Huddersfield Town Kit as well as some other HTFC goodies on the pitch during the half-time break of the Huddersfield Town V Millwall FC, Championship game on 6 April 2024; a game Town crucially won to keep their hopes of staying in the Championship alive.

Lola's clubmates from Woodlanders all attended the game and joined Lola on the pitch for the presentation. It was a great day for all the girls of Woodlanders FC. Craig Webb the WRGFL Chairperson was at the game and made the presentation to Lola alongside Huddersfield Town's very own Andy Booth.

 5th April 2024

Our West Riding Girls County Teams entered some sides into the Manchester Easter International Cup, with teams as far flung as Ireland, the USA and Dubai!

The girls were fantastic at all groups, and played some brilliant, positive football from first minute to last.

Our Under 10s were the side to beat in their group, putting in some brilliant wins, before losing narrowly in the cup final and securing the silver medal.

Our U11/12 group were in a really strong group, with some girls playing up a year. They made it through to the knockouts, where a last minute winner put them into the Plate Final. There, they took an early lead, which they held well to secure the trophy.

Our U13s entered the U14 competition, and showed some real on field quality on the day, against some top top sides. They narrowly missed out on the knockouts on Head to Head, but showed their ability and represented the county well.

Our U14s had a strong showing on the day, topping their group to make the Cup semi final. They controlled their semi with a comfortable 4-1 win, and faced off against Durham in the final. An early lead looked to be enough, but a final minute free kick forced penalties. Our takers were confident, and keeper Emme made 2 quality saves to secure the trophy.

Overall, the girls showed the best of what the WRGFL has to offer, playing some free-flowing, positive, quality football, and managed to secure some trophies and medals for our County.

The FA has issued its latest guidance on the use of shin pads in grassroots football, which West Riding Girls Football League is keen to reiterate to our local grassroots football community.

Safety is a key consideration for our game, and the Laws of the Game state that shin guards/pads are a compulsory piece of equipment.

Shin pads play an important role in injury prevention, as they are intended to protect the shin from injury. The amount of shin physically covered is an important consideration, as any part of the shin that is not covered is not as well protected.

‘Micro’ or ‘mini’ shin pads may therefore increase the risk of injury, due to the smaller amount of shin covered, compared to larger sized shin pads.

We advise that, when considering the protection offered by shin pads, that safety is prioritised by ensuring a good proportion of the shin area is covered, and therefore protected.

The materials used are also an important factor. Always look for a CE mark, which means the shin pads achieve minimum standards.

We suggest that shin pads not carrying such a mark should not be worn, as they may present an increased risk of injury to players.

Please give these protection levels serious consideration when deciding what is right for you or for your child.

Silent Support.png

This weekend is… for players

The game is different when you’re in it.

Your players are here for the applause, not the shouting. Action not distraction. Silent Support gives them the opportunity to trust their instincts and learn for themselves.

For coaches. Coaches deserve a safe space to champion their players away from interruptions. This weekend gives coaches the chance to see their players work in a completely different way.

For spectators

When spectators stand back, the game moves forward. The players have more freedom, and the play becomes more exciting to watch.

The last few Silent Support Weekends have shown better communication on the pitch, and behaviour has improved off the pitch.

Without side line influence, players can explore tactics, discover areas of weakness, and develop critical thinking.

Since Rainbow Laces kicked off in 2013, over a million people have laced up in support of LGBTQ+ inclusion in sport, fitness and physical activity. But this must-win game isn’t over yet.

Large parts of the LGBTQ+ community still can’t be their true selves whilst attending or participating in sporting events. And in 2023, that just blows our minds.

So while we should be proud of what’s been achieved so far, this is no time to take our eye off the ball. In the tenth year, we have to do one important thing… Keep it up!

Skillabus is a fantastic programme that can be used by clubs, coaches and parents. Some of our clubs are already signed up so if you are unsure, ask your coach or club representative. Some of the things they offer include:

Football Clubs

Our 5 online courses and 100 challenges use 25 years of football coaching expertise to take children aged 5-12 on a journey from beginner to star performer. They give your players an easy way to practise the right things - indoors or out. Every challenge has technique tips plus guidance on making it easier or harder depending on their starting point. You'll see a difference in skill and first touch which will add to their enjoyment of playing.

Parents

At our core is a desire to help parents develop their children's sports skills, and have fun together. A bit less screen time and a bit more physical activity is good for physical and mental wellbeing, as well as for building confidence and making friends. We believe that better skills make sport more enjoyable, so they'll play it more. We're sure that our ideas and guidance can help you help your child flourish.
